How do we organize all of my child's supplies?
- (Bring all of the supplies listed on the homepage; we will help the students organize their binders on the first few days.) Do not throw any papers away throughout the school year unless the teacher instructs your child to do so.
How do I find out about homework and what is going on at school?
- You can find the latest information on current topics, upcoming events as well as daily homework on this site. Students and Parents will receive access to Canvas at the beginning of the year and they will have a digital calendar.
How much homework will my child have?
- In general, your child can expect approximately 1 hour of homework each night, Monday through Thursday.
- Language Arts requires that students read independently and keep track of their reading in an assigned reading log, in addition to other work.
- Friday and weekend assignments, as well as the time spent on homework, may vary according to on-going projects, specific units and circumstances.
What are the expectations for homework?
- Each assignment given is either focused on a skill important to master or is essential for understanding the next day's lesson. Therefore, it is a part of your child's overall grade.
- To receive full credit for homework or to have an assignment accepted for grading, it needs to be "neat and complete." That is, the work is readable and an attempt at each assigned problem has been made. Generally, full credit is given for making an honest attempt at the work within the limits of each child's ability. Thus, it is a simple way to earn credit, even if some of the concepts are challenging at the time.
- Being on time with homework is also important. Any homework turned in late will not receive full credit.
Do the students get grades this year?
- Yes, the students receive letter grades starting in sixth grade.
What goes into my child's grades?
- Because we aim to educate the whole child, particularly in this transition year between elementary and middle school, a wide range of things factor into your child's grade. The following are approximate ranges when calculating grades:
2) Process (Ex: journals, class participation, contributions, growth) = 10-20%
3) Homework = 5-10%
How does my child keep track of his/her grades?
- Parents and students have access to grades through Home Access.
How will I know if my child has late or missing work?
- Students will have a digital calendar through Canvas. Students should also check the Team R Webpage on a daily basis. This will help students to ensure that all assignments have been completed. We strongly encourage parents to review the Team R Webpage, as well. This is an excellent way to spark communication with your child regarding his/her learning.
- Grades are entered into Home Access on a regular basis (once assignments have been graded). This system is an excellent way for students and parents to keep track of grades throughout each 12-week grading period.
- Should your child fail to complete an assignment, she will be assigned to homework lab (students report to a classroom to complete homework rather than attend recess). Once a student earns 5 homework labs, an after school detention will be assigned
How will the teachers communicate with me regarding my child's progress?
- During each grading period teachers may contact you by phone or e-mail about your student's progress.
One (1) Report card - Students receive a report card via Home Access with letter grades for each subject and teacher comments as appropriate.
* Parent/teacher conferences will also be offered twice during the school year. Look for this information on our website.
What is the best way to contact teachers if I have a question?
